Black Sunday

Today marks the six year anniversary of Black Sunday. On January 23rd, 2005 six FDNY firemen were forced to jump out the top floor window while fighting a fire when conditions got to bad. A mayday was called, but the important information was not given. Such as location and how much air each member had left. They stated they need a hole cut in the roof along with a ladder and rope over the side in order to get out, but the equipment did not get to them in time and were forced to jump. Three of the six firefighters died. They had gone in and had not seen any fire until suddenly flames shot up through the floor and had all of them pinned against the wall. The hose they had with them could not get water which did not allow them to put water on the fire.

This shows you that it is crucial to make sure all your member know their mayday procedures. Also. if you send a hose team in and you realize you will be unable to get them water due to frozen hydrants, get them out. Do not risk their lives if it is believed all the occupants are out of the apartments.

Remember Your Training

Today (January 23rd) three firefighters and a woman were injured in a two-alarm fire in Fairfax County. Firefighter responded to the call and entered the building. Shortly after a flashover occurs, as reported by the incident command, and three firefighters were injured. As a firefighter it is very important to remember all the training you receive. In this case these three firefighters should have noticed the signs that a flashover was going to occur and exited the building to ensure their safety. Remember it's our lives before others. It is a hard concept to follow considering we put our lives on the lines to save others. In a situation like the one these three encountered, you need to get out of the house.
