Flooding in Snyder County

The month of April has brought a lot of rain to much of the East. In Snyder county the Susquehanna River has been above flood stage for most of the month. Flooding has caused many roads to be shutdown for extended periods of time and has caused damage to many houses. So far the first week of May does not look anymore promising, there is more rain on the way.

Fatal Car Accident

Last Tuesday out in Penn Twp. during a downppur of rain a small pickup truck lost control, hit a guard rail and then was hit by a tow truck. The crash killed the driver of the small pickup and injured 2 others. Dauntless Hook and Ladder performed extrication for the 2 occupants in the pickup truck and then stayed on scene for about 5 hours providing lighting and to help clean up until the police allowed them to leave.

Live Fire Training

A few weeks ago Dauntless Hook & Ladder took a group of 25 firefighters to the training academy and did live fire training. The firefighters got to simulate fires using wooden pallots and hay. The fires were in a three story concrete building wiht multiple rooms. The fires were set on the 2nd and theird floors. Firefighters got to practice hose advancement, fire supression, communication, and leanr more abou thow fire "lives".

Arson

Recently in the Snyder County area there have been a lot of arson fires being set. There are expected to possibly be 2-3 arsonists out setting fires right now. Police say they have some leads as to who these people may be, but fires keep getting set. The arsonists are setting fires in small piles in alley ways, back porches, and by garages. These small fires then travel to a nearby house or houses and cause them to catch fire and cause major damage. Fire officials are becoming very frustrated and want to catch these arsonists.

Early Morning Fire

Around 1:30am in Chapman Twp. multiple fire departments including Selinsgrove were dispatched to a house fire with reported people trapped. The first chief on the scene said that everybody was accounted for and reported the house was fully engulfed in flames. After about a 15 minute drive me along with 5 others in our ladder truck got to the scene and saw the house was burnt to the ground with flames about 50ft in the air.

About 30 minutes in it was brought to the chiefs attention that everybody was not accounted for. We were told 2 residents were missing and their cars were at the house which led us to believe they were home. We were unable to locate the residents due to fire conditions, but it is still unclear to as if they were still in the house. We can only hope they made it out safely.

This morning around 7:45am a School Van carrying some students was struck by a pick up truck and then hit again by a Suzuki SUV causing the van to flip over onto its side. The drivers of the SUV and pickup truck did not suffer any injuries, but some students were transported to the local hospital for very minor injuries. The accident caused Route 522 by Salem Road to be shutdown for about an hour while the vehicles and debris were removed.
